Welcome

Welcome to the Fabulous Fibres Blog.
I've had a few queries lately about a supplies list so I'm writing this new post to tell you about the materials and equipment I use.
I do talk about all these things throughout the course, but perhaps if you want to work alongside me you might like to have the items in front of you.

So here goes.

For felt making as I do it you will need:

  • Wool tops. Merino wool is what I use and I buy it in a variety of colours.
  • Olive oil soap
  • Hot water
  • Some way of getting the water onto the wool, you could use a sponge to soak it up out of a bowl, or you could fill a plastic bottle with holes in the top to make a sprinkler effect, or you could buy a felting bulb like mine from 'Wingham Wool Works'
  • A towel.
  • A sheet of thin but firm polythene, (transparent plastic) about 15 inches wide
  • A sheet of nylon mesh. (net curtain, fly screen mesh or similar)
  • A bamboo mat
  • Scissors
  • Assorted fibres to add on top such as silk tops, wool, nepps etc. (Don't worry too much about this for the first go)
For planning to stitch:

  • Plastic sheet such as plastic pocket
  • Permanent marker.
For the machining:
  • A sewing machine that can do darning stitch, or that you can drop the feed.
  • Assorted coloured machine threads. I use Natesh variegated Titania from Silken Strands in Bangor.
  • Darning foot.
  • A hoop with calico stretched in it, if you'd like to practise machine embroidery.
  • Scissors
For the hand stitching:
  • A selection of embroidery threads in colours you like to work with and with different thicknesses and textures.
  • Embroidery needles . Better with a larger eye for thicker thread.

I hope this is helpful.
